Grade 4 Visits the Big Island

The 4th graders had a BLAST on the Big Island! Their first day they explored Hawaii Volcano National Park. They got up close and personal with sulfur and steam vents, looked into Halemaumau crater, and walked through an old lava tube. On the second day they stopped at Hawaii Botanical Gardens, Akaka Falls, Pu’ukohola Heiau, and Puako Petroglyph Park. At each stop they learned more about our special island chain. On the last day they visited Pu’uhonua o Honaunau to learn more about how this heiau was an important place of refuge for the early Hawaiians. They also stopped at Kaloko Fishpond to see how the fishpond works and helped feed the people.

The trip was a fun and educational experience for the students and something they surely won’t soon forget.
